Program Description
This introductory webinar will discuss current methodologies and resources related to the valuation of family limited partnerships (FLPs) and similar entities that are used primarily for estate-planning purposes. The focus of this webinar will be on calculating the value of the formation of an FLP in a tax engagement and the pitfalls that the valuation analyst must avoid in performing these types of engagements. Included in the webinar will be a discussion of the development of discounts, the source of the empirical data used to support the discounts, and the elements that are found in a well-written valuation report.

Rick Gray, CPA/ABV, CVA, ASA
Mr. Rick Gray has specialized in the fields of business valuation and litigation support services full-time for over 18 years. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1978 and a master’s degree in business administration from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1982. After a number of years in the healthcare industry, Mr. Gray entered public accounting, earned his Certified Public Accountant license in 1988 and began his career as an auditor and consultant with Deloitte & Touche. Mr. Gray is currently licensed as a CPA in both Florida and Maryland. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA), and the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). Mr. Gray is a member of both the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, where he is an instructor in their statewide ethics course, and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Gray has also taught for the Becker Professional Review Course, instructing candidates in the preparation of both the CPA and CFA examinations.
Mr. Gray has qualified as an expert witness for litigation engagements in federal and state courts in Maryland, Florida, and northern Virginia. He has made a number of presentations at both the local and national level and has authored articles in the areas of business valuation and litigation support. He is very active in the NACVA, having served as chair for the Valuation Credentialing Board, Executive Advisory Board, and most recently, the Education Quality Assurance Board. In addition to his board duties, Mr. Gray is a member of NACVA’s Speakers Bureau, the Examination Grading/Mentoring Team, and he serves as an instructor for the Consultants’ Training Institute. Mr. Gray was awarded the "Instructor of the Year" in 2008 and received NACVA’s “Circle of Light” award in 2009.
